Berber monkeyin Gibraltar
Although fossil scans suggest that the Iberian Peninsula was inhabited by Berber monkeys in prehistoric times, the present population on the Rock of Gibraltar is most likely due to the influence of man and its travel behaviour. It is conceivable that the Arab rule of southern Spain took place between 711 and 1492; the first written reports date back to 1704. Since, according to legend, Gibraltar remains in British hands for as long as Berber monkeys live there and the population had fallen to a few animals in 1942, Winston Churchill had some animals from Morocco extoled on the peninsula. Genetic studies have shown that the current population is due to two roots, one Algerian and one Moroccan. Today, Gibraltar is home to around 240 animals.
