The Britannia is an impressive British bullion coin that has been issued by the Royal Mint since 1997. Since 2013, the silver Britannia has been made of 999 fine silver (before 2013, the Britannia was made of 958 fine silver). The image of Britannia, the female embodiment of the island of Great Britain, has appeared on British coins for almost 2,000 years.
Obverse: Displays the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in addition to the face value of 2 pounds, featuring the Royal Mint’s guilloche design.
Reverse: Features artwork by Philip Nathan that depicts the internationally recognized Britannia figure standing firm against a powerful wind. Her visage has symbolized Britain’s strength and integrity on coinage since Roman times. The reverse includes a latent image, surface animation, tincture lines and micro text for added security.

In 2020, the Royal Mint revealed a design update for the cherished Britannia coin. The mint created four new security “elements” to make counterfeiting even more difficult. The first element is an updated background wave design, which captures the light on the coin’s surface. The second security addition is the inclusion of smooth lines on Britannia’s shield. The third is a holographic image of a padlock in the bottom left, which transitions to a trident when you tip the coin. Lastly, the minuscule Latin expression “Decus Et Tutamen” ('An ornament and a safeguard') is inscribed along the inner rim of the coin.
New in 2022, The Royal Mint has updated the iconic Britannia design to include additional security features. A latent image, surface animation, tincture lines, and micro text have been incorporated into Philip Nathan's iconic design.

The Great Britain Britannia Series:
Following the success of the Gold Britannia bullion coins introduced in 1987, The Royal Mint produced a 1 oz Silver Britannia coin in 1997, being issued only as proofs with a mintage of 20,000. Britannia Silver coins have a face value of two pounds. The coins produced from 1998-2012 contain .958 fine Silver, as opposed to the standard British sterling of .925, with the 2013 bullion issues being the first to contain .999 fine.
