is the central work of Michelangelo's (Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564) ceiling fresco, also known as the Genesis fresco. It is one of a series of illustrations of the Book of Genesis in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome commissioned by Pope Julius II. Michelangelo's ceiling fresco was influenced in part by the Italian painter Melozzo da Forli (1438-1494), who was known for his superb skills in foreshortening perspective. "The Creation of Adam" is considered a key Renaissance work in Rome, and its status as an iconic work of religious art is unsurpassed. Some art critics consider it the greatest pictorial work of Christianity. The fresco influenced a number of contemporary works, including the oil painting "The Raising of Lazarus" (c. 1517) by Sebastiano del Piombo.

Ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel

Originally, the design for the ceiling frescoes was limited to the twelve apostles and a few other decorative works. However, when Michelangelo began work on them in 1508, he expanded the entire concept. By the time he finished the ceiling frescoes in October 1512, he had painted more than 300 figures from the Book of Genesis and other stories from the Old Testament and classical mythology. For most of the work on the frescoes covering 520 m2 over the course of these four years, he worked under difficult conditions on a scaffold 18 metres high. In addition, although Michelangelo had some knowledge of painting with tempera on wooden panels, he was primarily a sculptor and his practical knowledge of the extremely difficult art of fresco painting was very limited. Nevertheless, Michelangelo's ceiling frescoes are considered the epitome of Renaissance art and one of the most beautiful Renaissance paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries.
