The USS Constitution
(English for constitution) is a wooden heavy frigate of the United States Navy. She is the oldest warship still seaworthy in the world and the second oldest still in service after HMS Victory. Her nickname, Old Ironsides, derives from the 1812 engagement with the British frigate Guerriere, because projectiles from that ship are said to have ricocheted off the Constitution's strong sideboards. Her long active service, the fact that she was never defeated, and especially Constitution's three successful engagements against British warships in the War of 1812 established the frigate's great national importance to the United States. In addition, many of her commanders and crew members, such as Stephen Decatur, Isaac Hull, William Bainbridge, and others, later made notable contributions in building the U.S. Navy. The unexpected defeats of the Constitution and her sister ships also played a role in British maritime discourse.
