From 1999 to 2003, the Zambian "African Wildlife" silver coin series was released, themed on the African elephant. These coins are referred to as the "Zambia Elephant". Issued with an annually changing elephant motif, the 1-ounce silver coins have a face value of 5,000 kwachas.

In 2004, production of the Zambian series was discontinued and continued with the Somali African Wildlife series.

The series owes its better known name "Somalia Elephant" to the annually changing elephant motif.The Bavarian Main Mint is responsible for the minting of the African Wildlife series.

Since 2004, the silver coin has been issued exclusively in the 1 ounce denomination; since 2011, it has also been issued as a 1 kilogram version. The silver content of all denominations is 999/1000, and the minting is done in stamp gloss.

The 1-ounce version had a face value of 1,000 Somalia Shillings (SOS) from 2004 to 2006; from 2007 on, it is 100 SOS. Due to the multi-layered problems of the country, the exchange rate of the Somalia Shilling is subject to strong fluctuations, whereby the nominal value converted into Euro tends almost towards 0.
