For more than 40 years, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) has been listing sites as "World Heritage". Since 2007, the Monnaie de Paris has been honouring various monuments on this list in a series of collector coins. From 2019, the theme will once again be extended worldwide.
In 2023, the National Palace of Sintra or Pena Palace in Portugal and Ferdinand II will be honoured.
The face of the coin features a portrait of Ferdinand II, King Consort of Portugal from 1837 to 1853 and the man behind the palace. The mosaics were inspired by those in the palace. The UNESCO logo, the "RF", the hallmarks and the year 2023 are also present.
The reverse of the coin depicts a view of the Pena National Palace. The mosaics in the palace have also been used on the reverse.
