Mintage: 6,000,000
Coin with Mintmark A for Berlin
On the fringes of political events surrounding Eastern politics, it brought in particular a gesture of historical relevance: the kneeling of Warsaw.
Immediately before the signing of the Warsaw Treaty on 7 December 1970, the SPD politician visited the monument to the heroes of the ghetto commemorating the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The fact that Brandt did not stand or stand at his knees during his laying of a wreath there, but paused to his knees, caused a worldwide sensation. Although not pronounced, his humble gesture was rightly understood as a request for forgiveness for the German war crimes. Brandt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 for his new Eastern policy. This historic event will be celebrated in 2020 for the 50th time and will be honoured by the Federal Government with a 2 euro coin.
