Thanks to the efforts of UNESCO, the term "cultural heritage" is not limited to buildings or collections of objects. It also includes living cultural expressions - traditions - that are passed down from generation to generation. In 2008, UNESCO therefore included Día de Muertos in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Today, the day (or days) is celebrated by all Mexicans, regardless of their religion or ethnic origin. However, in its origins, it dates back to the indigenous people of the region.
The most important facts about the Day of the Dead: From the origins of the celebration to the meanings of the different customs.
First things first: Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Although the two holidays are related, they are very different from each other in their traditions and atmosphere. Halloween is traditionally considered a dark night of fright and doom, while Día de los Muertos spans three days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Of course, the theme is death, but the purpose of it all is to show one's love and respect for deceased family members. In villages and towns throughout Mexico, revelers flaunt colorful costumes and makeup, hold pageants and parties, sing, dance and offer gifts to the deceased loved ones.
