The Belgenland was a transatlantic steamship of the Belgian-American shipping company Red Star Line launched under this name in 1914 and first put into service under the name Belgic in 1917. Designed as a luxury liner for passenger service, the effects of the First World War saw it used first as a freighter and then as a troop carrier with a completely changed exterior, while being operated by the White Star Line. For a short time immediately after the war it also served as a passenger ship, but exclusively for III class travellers. It was not until the Red Star Line took over the ship for good, which was not possible until 1923, and renamed it Belgenland again, that the ship could be used as a luxury liner in transatlantic service and later increasingly for cruises and round-the-world trips, as originally planned and built according to the original plans. It remained in service until 1936 and was initially one of the largest ships of its time. Due to its drastically different appearance as Belgic and Belgenland respectively, it was also called "the ship with two faces".
