Batman Batarang

A batarang is a bat-shaped throwing weapon used by Batman. They are the most basic and commonly used items in his arsenal. A variety of sizes and types have been developed, some of which are razor sharp. They can also be used as grappling hooks when attached to Batropes. Batman is also known to use Batarangs, which are equipped with additional tools and gadgets.

In most appearances, Batarangs are throwing weapons used by Batman. Depending on the era and/or creator, they are based on either Australian aboriginal boomerangs or Japanese shuriken. In all versions they are made of metal, usually steel alloy, and stylized/shaped in the form of bats. Batarangs are often made to fit in the utility belt, either by a folding mechanism or because they are small enough to be stowed in its compartments.

Batarangs are primarily used as ranged weapons to overwhelm or disable enemies from a distance. Although they are usually thrown by hand, some have been fired from devices such as batarang guns or used as melee weapons. Early versions returned to Batman and Robin after being thrown, but this has been lost over time. Batarangs can also be used to break objects such as glass and pipes. Precisely thrown Batarangs are capable of disarming enemies or destroying weapons. In some stories, Batman has added tranquilizers to his Batarangs to incapacitate opponents immediately or for an extended period of time.

The sharpness of Batarangs often changes, with most being depicted as blunt-edged to take out enemies. Others, however, are so sharp that they can cut through objects or drill into the opponent. Batarangs were also used to flip switches and disrupt machines, although technological change often forced Batman to use special variants or other devices.
