Marie Curie

The French chemist and physicist of Polish descent laid the foundations for modern nuclear physics. Marie Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, together with her husband Pierre Curie and Antoine Henri Becquerel, for the successful detection of radioactivity and radiation phenomena. For the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. This made Curie the first woman ever, as well as the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize a second time. In 1906 she was appointed professor of physics at the Sorbonne and in 1922 was appointed a member of the "International Commission for Intellectual Cooperation" of the League of Nations Council...On July 4, 1934, Marie Curie died of leukemia in Sancellemoz, Switzerland. This disease was probably caused by the overdoses of radioactive radiation during her work. The bodies of Marie Curie and her husband were buried in the Panthéon.
