VIRENIUM
Name of a modern coin metal used for coins of the Isle of Man since 1978. Virenium used between 1978 and 1982 consists of a nickel core plated with an alloy (Magnimat M) of copper (81%), zinc (10%) and nickel (9%). The coinage used since 1983 does not contain a nickel core and is non-magnetic. The name Virenium is derived from Virena Pobjoy, wife of the owner of the Pobjoy Mint.
Pobjoy Mint
Founded in 1965 by the Pobjoy family, the Pobjoy Mint produces coins as legal tender for more than ten British Overseas Territories. As a private mint, we also produce medals, medallions, official medals, tokens and numismatic gifts.
