Conclusion : The earth as a sphere

But when the Victoria entered the harbor on September 6, 1521, proof of the spherical shape of the Earth had been provided for the first time, and also the realization that one day is lost when the Earth is circumnavigated westward.

The circumference of the earth, which had long been underestimated, was also correctly recognized by this sea voyage.

Magellan's expedition also marked the first circumnavigation of the globe in human history.

Fernando de Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães / Spanish: Fernando de Magallanes) was a Portuguese navigator. He was born around 1480 in Sabrosa to a noble family.

After disputes with the Portuguese king, Fernando de Magellan left his homeland in 1517 and offered his services to the Spanish king, Charles I..

He tried to inspire the Spaniards with the plan to seek a western sea route to the Spice Islands (Moluccas).

In 1519, Fernando de Magellan was commissioned by Charles V to explore a westward route to the East Indies.

The Spanish had great interest in such a sea route because the eastern route through the Indian Ocean was already dominated by the Portuguese.

The Spanish king provided Fernando de Magellan with five ships and commissioned him to seek passage.

On September 20, 1519, the flagship Trinidad left the port of Seville with four escort ships.

On his sea route to India, he explored the passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

After weeks of searching, he entered the sought-after strait of Patagonia on October 21, 1520, which is now called the Strait of Magellan after him.
