Die Tüpfelhyäne oder Fleckenhyäne ist eine Raubtierart aus der Familie der Hyänen. Sie ist die größte Hyänenart und durch ihr namensgebendes geflecktes Fell gekennzeichnet; ein weiteres Charakteristikum ist die „Vermännlichung" des Genitaltraktes der Weibchen. Die Art besiedelt weite Teile Afrikas und ernährt sich vorwiegend von größeren, selbst gerissenen Wirbeltieren. Tüpfelhyänen leben in Gruppen mit einer komplexen Sozialstruktur, die bis zu 130 Tiere umfassen können und von Weibchen dominiert werden.

The spotted hyena is a species of predator belonging to the hyena family. It is the largest species of hyena and is characterized by its spotted coat, which gives it its name; another characteristic feature is the “masculinization” of the female genital tract. The species inhabits large parts of Africa and feeds mainly on larger vertebrates that it has killed itself. Spotted hyenas live in groups with a complex social structure that can include up to 130 animals and are dominated by females.
