History of rum production in Antigua & Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are 2 Caribbean islands that form a country between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Antigua and Barbuda is a Caribbean destination that is as exotic as it is luxurious. There is a rich history to discover here and some of the best rums in the world. The history of rum production in Antigua dates back to the early 1700s, when sugar was introduced to the island and quickly became the main crop on the plantations. Sugar cane by-products, such as molasses, honey or sugar cane juice, are the most important ingredients for the production of rum through fermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then matured in oak barrels and thus contributes to the production of the globally sought-after rum from the Caribbe

Throughout the Caribbean's colonial period, competition for the sale of rum and for the security that armed ships brought was fierce among English Caribbean planters. The governors of the Caribbean islands supported the sale of rum to the Royal Navy in the hope that the move would help keep the pirates of the Caribbean at bay. Pirates often made extra money bringing rum to heavily taxed colonies in North America and the West Indies. As early as the 16th century, the British government used "revenue cutters", small, light ships, to stop the pirates and smugglers.
