Der Goldrausch – ein Wendepunkt in der australischen Geschichte…

Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde mehr Gold gefördert als in den vorangegangenen 5.000 Jahren. Der enorme Bergbauboom, der in dieser Zeit weltweit stattfand, führte zu einer beispiellosen Steigerung der Goldproduktion, wobei Australien natürlich zu den bedeutendsten Quellen gehörte.

Gold wurde 1851 in New South Wales entdeckt, woraufhin kurz darauf der Goldrausch in Victoria begann. Der anfängliche Boom dauerte anderthalb Jahrzehnte, wobei die Gesamtproduktion in den ersten zehn Jahren unglaubliche 124 Millionen Pfund Gold betrug – davon 110 Millionen Pfund aus Victoria. Als wegweisender Moment in der Entstehung der australischen Nation hatte der Goldrausch der 1850er Jahre den offensichtlichsten Einfluss auf die Bevölkerung.

Im Jahr 1851 lebten etwa 405.000 Menschen in den Kolonien – bis 1861 war diese Zahl auf weit über eine Million gestiegen. In Victoria, dem Zentrum des Goldrauschs, stieg die Einwohnerzahl innerhalb von zehn Jahren von 75.000 auf 540.000. Der Goldrausch hatte zwar positive Auswirkungen auf einige Regionen, war jedoch nicht überall von Vorteil. In Südaustralien beispielsweise führte die Aussicht auf Goldfunde im Osten zu einer massiven Abwanderung, wodurch die Kolonie in eine Arbeitskräftkrise, eine Währungskrise und schließlich fast in den Bankrott geriet.

Nach dem Chaos, das der Ausbruch des „Goldrauschs“ mit sich brachte, hatte die Entdeckung des weltweit beliebtesten Edelmetalls eine belebende Wirkung auf die baldige Nation. Das daraus resultierende rasante Wachstum in Handel, Landwirtschaft, Transport und Kommunikation erforderte eine starke Fokussierung auf eine verantwortungsvolle Regierung, da die Kolonialverwaltungen nun mit den Forderungen einer wachsenden Bevölkerung nach Straßen, Eisenbahnen, Wasser, Landreform und vielem mehr konfrontiert waren.

Der Goldrausch schuf ein nationales Identitätsgefühl, weckte politisches Bewusstsein und lieferte den für den Aufbau der Infrastruktur notwendigen Reichtum. Er war der entscheidende Moment auf Australiens Weg zur Eigenstaatlichkeit, die schließlich 1901 mit der Gründung der Föderation erreicht wurde.

The Gold Rush – a watershed in Australian history…

More gold was produced during the 19th century than in the preceding 5,000 years. The huge mining booms taking place around the world during this period took gold production to unprecedented heights, with Australia, of course, amongst the most significant sources.

Gold was discovered in New South Wales in 1851, with the Gold Rush beginning in Victoria soon after. The initial boom lasted a decade and a half, with the total output for the first ten years a staggering £124 million worth of gold – £110 million from Victoria. A seminal moment in the creation of the Australian nation, the most obvious impact of the 1850s Gold Rush was on population.

Around 405,000 people inhabited the colonies in 1851 – by 1861 it had risen to well over one million. In Victoria, the centre of the rush for gold, the population rose from 75,000 to 540,000 in ten years. Whilst benefitting some regions, the positive impact of the Gold Rush was not universal. In South Australia, for example, the prospect of finding gold in the east led to a severe exodus, and the colony fell into a labour crisis, a currency shortage and near-bankruptcy as a result.

After the chaos of the outbreak of ‘gold fever’, the discovery of the world’s favourite precious metal had a galvanising impact across the soon-to-be nation. The resulting rapid growth in trade, agriculture, transport and communication necessitated a sharp focus on responsible government, with colonial administrations now faced with demands from a growing population for roads, rail, water, land reform and more.

Forging a sense of national identity, sparking political awareness, and providing the wealth necessary for infrastructural development, the Gold Rush was the pivotal moment on Australia’s road to nationhood, ultimately achieved at Federation in 1901.
